Kevin Michael VerKamp
Kevin Michael VerKamp's art is a vibrant tapestry woven from a life transformed. His journey began conventionally enough, with a childhood interest in art giving way to other pursuits. But a yearning for something deeper led him, in his late thirties, to the heart of South America. There, amidst the ancient traditions of shamanism and the profound experiences facilitated by Ayahuasca, VerKamp rediscovered his artistic voice. He describes it as a "third eye opening," a spiritual awakening that infused his work with a newfound depth and purpose. His canvases explode with color and intricate design, reflecting the interconnectedness of all things and the rich tapestry of consciousness he encountered. This journey not only birthed a striking artistic style, but also inspired VerKamp to share his insights through the written word. He is the author of several books, including "Divine Mystical Truths," which weave together his captivating artwork with life-guiding wisdom gleaned from his transformative experiences. VerKamp's art bridges worlds, merging the insights of shamanism with the inclusive message of Christianity, his childhood faith. Exhibited across the globe, his work resonates with those who seek art that speaks to the soul's journey.
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: PARIS 18TH CENTURY - JUXTAPOSITION IN THE BALLET THEATER
In the 19th century, Paris was a city of great contrasts, with extreme wealth and poverty existing side by side. This contrast was also reflected in the world of ballet, which was a popular and influential form of entertainment at the time. There is some historical evidence to suggest that in the 19th century, wealthy patrons of the French ballet did take advantage of young dancers who were often from poorer backgrounds. At the time, ballet dancers were typically employed by the ballet companies and received very low wages, making them vulnerable to exploitation by wealthy patrons who could offer them financial support in exchange for sexual favors or other forms of exploitation. One example of this was the case of Marie Taglioni, a famous ballerina of the 19th century who was known for her ethereal, delicate style of dancing. Taglioni was pursued by a number of wealthy patrons during her career, and it was rumored that some of these patrons made inappropriate advances towards her. While there is no definitive proof of this, the rumors suggest that such behavior was not uncommon at the time. In addition to individual instances of exploitation, there was also a broader culture of sexualization and objectification of female ballet dancers in the 19th century. Dancers were often expected to perform in revealing costumes that emphasized their bodies, and they were frequently depicted in art and literature as objects of desire. Despite these challenges, many talented dancers were able to succeed and make a name for themselves in the 19th century ballet world. However, the exploitation and objectification of young dancers by wealthy patrons is a dark chapter in the history of French ballet, and it highlights the need for greater protections for workers in the arts and entertainment industries. In the ballets of the 19th century, wealthy characters were often depicted as elegant and refined, with luxurious costumes and elaborate sets that conveyed their wealth and status. Meanwhile, poorer characters were often portrayed as rustic or downtrodden, with simpler costumes and sets that reflected their humble backgrounds. One example of this juxtaposition can be seen in the ballet "Giselle", which premiered in Paris in 1841. The ballet tells the story of a peasant girl named Giselle who falls in love with a wealthy nobleman, only to discover that he is engaged to another woman. The ballet features a stark contrast between the rustic, earthy world of the peasants and the refined, opulent world of the nobility. Another example can be seen in the ballet "La Fille Mal Gardée", which premiered in Paris in 1789 but was later revised and popularized in the 19th century. The ballet tells the story of a young girl named Lise who is in love with a poor farmer, but whose mother wants her to marry a wealthy landowner. The ballet features a contrast between the simple, pastoral world of the farmers and the grandeur of the landowner's estate. These ballets and others like them reflect the social and economic divisions of 19th century Paris, and they continue to be celebrated for their vivid depictions of the human experience and their exploration of themes that remain relevant today. Philippe de Lasalle was a French textile designer and manufacturer who was active in the late 18th century during the period of Jean Francois Bony. Lasalle was known for his innovative use of color and pattern in textile design, as well as his expertise in creating high-quality fabrics for the luxury market. In the style of Philippe de Lasalle, one might expect to see intricate and detailed designs featuring bold colors and ornate patterns.
